What Are NDIS Individual Supports – And Could They Make A Difference In Your Day?

Fraser Coast Disability Services support workers

Every person’s day looks different — and so does the support that makes it work. That’s the whole idea behind NDIS individual supports, and it’s why so many participants tell us they wish they’d known about them sooner.

If there are parts of your day that are harder than they should be — getting ready in the morning, keeping on top of the house, making it to appointments, getting out and doing the things you actually want to do — individual supports exist to help with exactly that. One support worker. Just for you. Built around your life, not someone else’s schedule.

Here’s everything you need to know.

The Basics

Individual supports are funded through the Core Supports section of your NDIS plan. They’re one-on-one — meaning your support worker is there specifically for you, not splitting their time between a group of people.

What that looks like day-to-day depends entirely on you. That’s the point. There’s no standard package, no set menu of activities you have to choose from. You tell us what your day needs to look like, and we build support around that.

At Fraser Coast Disability Services we provide individual supports across Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Pialba, Urangan, Scarness, Torquay, Eli Waters and the surrounding Fraser Coast — and we’ve yet to meet two participants whose support looks identical.

What Can Individual Supports Actually Help With?

More than most people expect. Here’s the real-world version:

Getting through the morning. Personal care, hygiene, getting dressed — whatever your routine looks like, your support worker is there to help it actually happen without it taking everything out of you before the day has even started.

Keeping the house liveable. Laundry, dishes, vacuuming, general tidying. The stuff that piles up fast and feels impossible when you’re already stretched. A support worker can help you stay on top of it, or work alongside you to build those skills yourself over time.

Eating properly. Meal prep, cooking, planning what’s in the fridge. This sounds small but it isn’t — eating well changes everything, and it’s an area where consistent support makes a real difference.

Getting out. This one matters a lot. Whether it’s a medical appointment, the markets on a Saturday, a walk along the Esplanade, or just getting out of the house because staying in it all day isn’t good for anyone — your support worker goes with you and makes it happen.

Medications and health routines. Prompts and assistance to make sure nothing gets missed, without it feeling like you’re being managed.

Building skills for the long term. Individual supports aren’t just about getting through today. A good support worker helps you do more for yourself over time — whether that’s navigating public transport, managing money, building social confidence, or working toward whatever independence looks like for you personally.

This Is Different From Group Programs

Worth being clear on this because people sometimes confuse the two.

Our programs like Rising Stars and Social Mix Nights are group-based — they’re brilliant for connection, community, and doing things alongside other people. Plenty of participants do both, and the two work well together.

Individual supports are different because the attention is undivided. Your support worker isn’t managing a room. They’re focused on you, following your lead, and adjusting to what you need that day — including the days where what you need looks different from what was planned.

The Support Worker Relationship Is Everything

We’ll be honest — the quality of individual supports lives or dies on the relationship between participant and support worker. A bad match makes everything harder. A good one makes an enormous difference to your confidence, your routine, and honestly your whole outlook.

We take matching seriously. We don’t just assign whoever’s available. We think about personality, interests, communication style, and what you’ve told us matters to you. And if something isn’t working, we want to know — we’d rather have that conversation early than have you put up with support that isn’t right.

You can get a real sense of the kind of people who work here through Tayla’s story from our Star Gala Staff Awards — it says a lot about what we actually value in our team.

How Individual Supports Fit With Everything Else

Individual supports often sit alongside other types of NDIS support, and they work well together.

A lot of participants use individual supports as a foundation while they’re working toward something bigger — like Supported Independent Living. Building daily living skills and confidence through one-on-one support is often what makes the transition to a SIL home feel genuinely achievable rather than daunting. Becky’s story is a good example of how that journey can unfold.

If respite is part of your plan — or you think it should be — our Short Term Accommodation options in Hervey Bay work alongside individual supports without any complication.
